It works!
What more is there to say? This is a pop-up head sprinkler tool, and it works. It's made well enough that I can't imagine it failing in my lifetime with the 30 or so pop up heads I maintain. I probably won't be able to pass it down to the next generation, but I don't think it's likely that my rain bird pop up heads will still be in service either.

Poor design, handles fall off, sharp edges can cut hands!
I do not share the excitement from the other review. The both green handle covers slide off the tool when it is being used. Astonishing, that someone would put out for sell such a poorly crafted tool. When the handle slide off, either the tool or the handle falls into the greenery. The both handles were punched from a sheet metal and in my case have had such sharp edges that I cut my hand. I filed them off to prevent that from happening again.

A smaller issue is that the adjustment screw cannot be held in place, and it hits the opposite handle under a wrong angle.

Workaround: Use silicon or "grab it" type of gel to attach the handles in a more permanent fashion to the pliers.
The perfect tool for me
This tool is the foundation of the functionality of irrigating my yard. I am able to clamp the tool to the pop-up, keeping it above ground in order to clean the nozzle filter, make adjustments, or replace the nozzle. I cannot imagine being without one of these tools. Mine works perfectly. Thank you, Rain Bird.

Great multi-purpose tool - speeds up installations
This Rain Bird ET-P1K dripline tool is a must have for working with dripline systems. It's actually a multi-purpose tool.

The circular center end is used to install 1/4" barbed emitters, couplers and connects. Use the circular end to hold the rounded end of the emitter securely - it won't fall out and end up in the dirt. With the emitter inserted this way, the barbed end is pointing out. Find your mainline and center the barb on the tubing. Press with a slight twisting action to help things pierce, not collapse the tube. You can feel the barbed end slide into place. At that point, simply pull back and the emitter remains in place. No leaks and no scrappy job of multiple attempts to install. Most of all, it saves on your fingers.

The slot on the side of the tool is for pulling out an unwanted 1/4" barbed emitter or connector from your mainline. Slide it under the 1/4" part and gently lift it out and away from the mainline.

Finally, about that hole you...

Great tree saver!
I purchased this to deep water our trees that were newly planted in the spring. The TX drought was taking a toll on them and the ground was so hard and had deep cracks throughout that when watered the water ran off of where it truly needed to be. With the deep root irrigator I am now able to cut my watering time in half. I can do a deep water and have it get right to the root system. My trees perked up almost instantly. Others stated there should be a turnoff on the item, I went to Lowes and purchased a .97 cent turnoff and it works great! This item definetely saves time and water since it doesn't runoff and gets to where it needs to be!

Yard butler, not as I had hoped
I had previously used a root irrigator that had holes on the sides of the rod and wasn't able to tell how this was designed before the purchase. Unfortunately, it only has one hole it and is at the end and points downward. The downfall is, when you're pushing the yard butler into the ground, it becomes clogged with dirt and isn't functional until you pull it back out and clean it out. I solved the problem by drilling holes in the side of it to irrigate trees without the hassle of having to unclog it over-and-over. It serves it's purpose with some additional work, would recommend buying one with holes in the side, not the bottom.
Robust Garden Tool
I was pleased to find that this tool is well made. No doubt, the heavy steel used and its simple design will make this product last a long time. Inserting the rod into the soil is a breeze with the water turned on high - it pretty much drills itself into the ground with little help needed. If deep-root watering is what your trees need, get one of these.
